This site is dedicated to the memory of Gladys Wade.

Gladys lived all her young life at Hilsea together with Edna and Maureen, her sisters, and George, her brother. Although very poor Gladys always says what a happy childhood she had, remembering fondly playing and swimming at Hilsea Lido Due to the war Gladys left school at 13 where after she had a succession of jobs which included working in a factory, a shoe shop and a cinema. Gladys loved telling her grandchildren stories about the war. Of how she was evacuated (an unhappy experience) cut short by their Mother when on a visit she found them to be infested with head lice Another favourite tale was that during a night-time air-raid the family were making their way to the shelter when her sister Edna dropped her money box and they scrabbled around in the dark trying to find all the 3d bits, bombs dropping around them! Whilst working at the Essoldo Cinema Cosham, Gladys met and married John Hogg, a local boy. In 1954 they gave birth to their first daughter Janice and then moved to London where John joined the Metropolitan Police Force. Shortly after, their second daughter Mary was born. In the early 60s John transferred to the Hampshire Police and the family moved to Gosport. Gladys was relieved to be back nearer to her own family and the sea. This period was spent raising her children in which she took great delight. After her marriage break-up Gladys went on to meet Rod Wade and in 1977 they married. These subsequent years were spent with her family looking after her grandchildren, whom she adored. She liked her bingo and was a demon with the one-armed bandits. Her last holiday was, in fact, in Las Vegas with Jan, Mary and their husbands. A holiday experience which she loved but during which she barely gambled at all. Only last year Gladys was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis which took its toll very quickly and she became unable to do the things she had always enjoyed. Thanks to Rod’s loving support and care Gladys was able to pass peacefully away at home, her final days filled with constant visits from her loving family. A testament to how loved and treasured she was.
